First you see westbound mixed train 101 with two 1600's. Then comes an eastbound ballast train with three 1600's.

The railway companies that built the Gaspe railway

Unfortunately these pages were copied from photocopies of the original book, and some copies are not perfectly clear. The original books are available for public viewing at the Musée de la Gaspesie.


It covers the history of the construction of the railway on the southern part of the Gaspe coast.
The railways involved are highlighted as follows:

1872 The Bay of Chaleurs Railway Company was incorporated.

1882 The Baie des Chaleurs Railway Company was incorporated.

-Bay Chaleur Scandal

-1893 after 8 years 78 miles of track to Caplan was completed.


1893 The Atlantic and Lake Superior Railway Company was incorporated.

1894 Authority for the purchase of the Baie des Chaleurs Railway by the Atlantic and Lake Superior Railway Company.

-it took four years to complete the twenty miles of track to Paspebiac.


1901 Atlantic, Quebec and Western Railway Company incorporated to build from Gaspe Basin, through the interior of the Gaspe Peninsula, to a point at or near Causapscal.

-agreed to complete the Bay Chaleur line to Gaspe first.

-the opening of the railway through to Gaspe on July 17th.,1912.


1903 Quebec Oriental Railway Company incorporated to build from Riviere du Loup to Matapedia.

1909 The Quebec Oriental Railway Company had acquired the Atlantic and Lake Superior Railway Company and the Baie des Chaleurs Railway Company.

1929 Purchase of the Quebec Oriental Railway Company and the Atlantic, Quebec and Western Railway Company by the Canadian National Railway Company.
